Are the changes being implemented across all football – schools, grassroots and academies?
Yes, they are. The player pathway and maximum formats will be implemented across schools and community- based grassroots football from the start of 2026/27 academic year and football season. As well as the maximum formats, the grassroots game is being encouraged to increase use of varied formats across the youth pathway in coming seasons. The academy system and talent pathways for both boys and girls already use varied formats across their age groups as part of their games programme. They have been consulted throughout this process and are fully supportive from a player development perspective.
